Public Housing Program

Public housing is government-owned housing units or complexes that are provided to low-income individuals and families at subsidized rental rates. These housing units are managed and maintained by local housing authorities like County Housing.

County Housing owns and maintains public housing located throughout the county, both in multifamily developments and single-family homes.

Ownership and management

Public housing is owned and operated by government agencies, often local housing authorities. The government owns the housing units and is responsible for their maintenance and management.

Eligibility

Public housing is typically reserved for households with very low incomes. There are strict income limits for residents to qualify and rent is usually set at 30% of a tenant’s income. See “Frequently Asked Questions” below for more on income and other requirements.

Tenant choice

Residents choosing public housing have limited choice compared to the Housing Choice Voucher program in the location of their housing, as they must reside wherever County Housing has public housing developments or properties.

Subsidy type

The subsidy provided through the Public Housing program is in the form of reduced rent, making it highly affordable for those who qualify.

In general, you can stay in public housing as long as you are compliant with your lease and your income continues to qualify you for assistance.
